The lazy days of summer are coming to an end and back-to-school time is upon us.  Besides purchasing all of the new gear, supplies and clothes, let’s take a moment to review our tween’s and family’s routine.  Now is a great time to introduce new important and healthy habits.

Here are our top five habits for getting back-to-school ready:

1. Reading Time

Reading helps tweens expand their vocabulary, build communication skills and is proven to have a direct impact on educational achievement.  Whether before bed or during another time of the day, make time for your tween to read and be sure to provide them with reading material outside of their school work.

2. Face Cleansing Routine

Zits and teens are almost synonymous words but teen acne can be avoided in many instances by instilling an early facial cleansing routine.  Add a facial cleanser to your back-to-school supply list such as Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Wash or the Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser (a favorite with my tween).  It’s not too early to begin moisturizing either.

Try Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Facial Moisture Clear Skin or the Neutrogena Naturals Multi-Vitamin Nourishing Moisturizer for your tween and yourself.  I had very sensitive skin as a tween and teenager and found Neutrogena’s products to be the only ones I could use on my skin so it’s a brand I very much recommend when introducing a facial cleansing routine to tweens.

3. Prepare for the Future

Or at least for the next day.  I try this every year and it finally seems to be sinking in with my eldest tween.  She will now pack her backpack, prepare her lunch, check her closet for clean uniforms and check off all the items she needs to do to be ready for the next school day.  It eliminates the morning rush, ensures that homework won’t be forgotten at home and puts their minds at ease as they end the day.

4. Family Dinner Time

You’ve heard over and over again how important it is to eat dinner as a family.  Make it a priority during the 2013-2014 school year.   Stock the refrigerator with healthy foods and condiments and be sure to follow us.  We’ll be sharing tips, recipes and advice on eating healthier as the year continues so keep checking back.

5. Me Time

This habit is for you!  The tween years are marked with a lessening level of “neediness”.  As they become more independent, start incorporating time for self-wellness into your schedule.  Look for local deals at spas or gyms near you.

For our Miami amigas, book an 80 minute facial at The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental during the month of August and receive a complimentary ESPA lip treatment which includes a gentle exfoliation, massage and hydration with the replenishing lip balm and a mango pomegranate mimosa by the pool.

Happy Back to School! Abrazos!
