Can you think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than at Macy’s, attending a panel discussion and fashion show with celebrity stylists and costume designers, while the music of such greats as Diana Ross, Gloria Gaynor, Tina Turner and Michael Jackson fills the air? I did just that at The Soul Era event at Macy’s in Miami’s Aventura location, celebrating Black History Month. When it comes to fashion, the styles of the 60’s and 70’s are iconic, and play a huge role in the fashion we see today. It was a pleasure to be a part of the audience for the panel that included costume designer Johnette Boone, celebrity stylist June Ambrose, as well as Evelyn Onyejuruwa, the founder and CEO of Ankara Miami. The panel was moderated by Neki Mohan, a veteran news anchor with Miami’s Local 10 station.
While the panel celebrated the beauty and style of the black community, there are several things that the panelists said that serve as great advice for anyone.
TOP FASHION & DESIGN TIPS FROM RECOGNIZED STYLISTS
- Johnetta Boone said that people decide if they are going to interact with you within 3 seconds of seeing you. Color is a key factor in this, what you’re wearing may attract or repel people from approaching you. This plays a huge role in things like dates, job interviews, even someone making conversation in a waiting room or elevator.
- June Ambrose is a celebrity stylist who has worked with Mary J. Blige, Sean Combs, Mariah Carey, Jay Z and so many others throughout her 22-year career. As she reflected on her work in music videos, she said, “it wasn’t about playing dress-up, it was about touching a culture. I was chasing the dream with my eyes open.” For the aspiring stylists and designers in the audience, she had inspiring words: “You can be a star in everything you do if you do it with passion and integrity”.
One of the audience members asked if it was necessary to spend a lot of money for a good wardrobe. Johnetta said that you pay for quality and craftsmanship. Spend some money on key pieces that will last 10 or 15 years, you’ll definitely get a return on your investment.
And about that fashion show? Check out the fierce outfits from the Macy’s collection and designers from Ankara Miami.
