It’s no secret- I love the Florida Keys & Key West! While the winter months offer an amazing get away from the cold northern temperatures, the summer and early fall months offer a wonderful opportunity for families to visit the Keys. Why? According to Florida Keys & Key West visitor officials, summer rates are 25% less on average and fall rates are 13% less on average than peak winter rates. That is a fantastic savings for families or a weekend couples getaway.
The best place to start your search is on the Florida Keys & Key West website. While you do research on potential properties for your visit- check out the many ‘live cams’ on the site. The video feeds will immediately temp you to head down the Overseas Highway!
In my early career as a public and media relations professional I had the opportunity to work with the Florida Keys tourism management and loved every minute. Flash forward and our team recently had the opportunity to return to the unique island chain and of course to its hottest location- Key West. You have the same opportunity to enjoy unique and historical hotel properties but at a solid value during these low season offerings. And although Key West and the Florida Keys offer many attractions and locations for couples or adults only- it is a very fun location for families as well.
Specifically in Key West, one of my favorite properties is the very historical Casa Marina located near the southernmost point of the USA. Because it is outside of the highly trafficked and famous ‘Duval Street’ area, I feel this beachfront property is a great option for families. The property has significant historical value and it makes you feel like you stepped back in time when Henry Flagler opened its doors in 1920. The rooms and amenities are all modern, luxurious and comfortable as it is now a Waldorf Astoria property.
For more family savings, be sure to research the Keys tourism site and consider staying on some of the other Keys including Marathon and Islamorada in the middle Keys. Check out a Los Tweens Travel post about The Florida 500 & Key West Attractions for Families.
One of our Los Tweens & Teens readers sent us great photos from their Key West summer experience with young tweens.
For a couples getaway we enjoyed The Conch House Heritage Inn. Located in the heart of Old Town Key West, the historic Key West bed and breakfast is just 1.5 blocks from Duval Street and just steps away from the Hemingway House Museum. Our quiet weekend getaway included a sunset ‘wine’ cruise for adults only. It truly was worthwhile as we realize that adults need their fun as well! We talked, shopped, ate mucho delicious food, danced and just had a great time.
If you’re planning a trip through the Florida Keys & Key West, anytime this summer through September is a great time to visit and save some budget while you’re at it. Be sure to make time and stop at each Key as they all have their unique charm and special offerings. From fishing to key lime pie to live music and great food, you’ll find something to remember.

As a mother of twin tweens in 2011 and an active Girl Scout Troop leader, Cristy realized there was a need to develop bilingual digital content and foster a community facing the challenges of raising kids after first grade. That year she founded and remains co-Publisher of Los Tweens & Teens, to support multicultural parents and mentors with content related to raising Gen Z- tweens & teens ages 7-18. Through the Los Tweens & Teens LIVE events such as Teens & Me – the growing team aims to provide our community with essential resources from chats with therapists to battle anxiety and bullying, to understanding social media and technology.
