As a fan of the first Frozen, Gianna our teen correspondent was ecstatic to see the second. Frozen 2 — the sequel to Disney’s 2013 Blockbuster– continues the adventures of Arendelle’s magical Queen Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel); her kind sister, Anna (Kristen Bell); and everyone’s favorite snowman, Olaf (Josh Gad).
Frozen broke numerous records and won several accolades including an academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Disney decided to test their luck and create a sequel. This time around, the characters undertake a dangerous journey to a mysterious enchanted forest, hoping to discover the source of Elsa’s powers. Throughout the film the sisters learn more about their parents’ deaths and backgrounds; thanks to several flashbacks. Along the way, they make new friends and learn more about their parent’s past in hopes that their family’s truth helps the sisters save Arendelle.
There’s lots of humor thanks to our favorite snowman Olaf and the lovable reindeer Sven, and — of course — big musical numbers, the sequel is ultimately a bit more intense than the original and in our opinion a bit more graphic for smaller children. Expect scenes of enchanted spirits chasing and and in some cases attacking Arendelle and the main characters with wind, water, fire, and more.
Overall, this charming musical sequel again elevates the positive messages about sisterhood, and is focused on empowerment, acceptance, tolerance, perseverance, and true love. However, the music (again co-composed and written by spouses Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez) doesn’t include an obvious successor to the once ubiquitous “Let It Go,” although “Into the Unknown” features the same raw emotion and impressive vocals of Idina Menzel.
Frozen 2 hit theaters on November 22, 2019 and is rated PG.
