Last month, my family and I were invited to represent Los Tweens and Teens at the Media Day Event for Animal Kingdom’s newest dining establishment, Harambe Market. As huge Disney fans, we were thrilled to attend and be treated to delicious fare inspired by the street foods of Africa.
Harambe Market is constructed on an old colonial-era train depot, with plenty of seating and sights, sounds and smells, and of course, that ever-present Disney magic, that makes you feel like you are truly in another continent. Nestled just outside of Animal Kingdom’s Africa, families can thrill their tastes buds and quench their thirst after their journey through Kilamanjaro Safaris, as they prepare to depart to Rafiki’s Planet Watch, or on their way to shows and attractions in Asia. This latest addition to Animal Kingdom features four unique counters offering delicious meals and refreshments.
Kitamu Grill featuring grilled chicken skewer or ground beef kebab flatbread sandwich.
Famous Sausages showcasing a new take on the corn dog with a boerewors sausage fried in curried corn batter.
Chef Mwanga’s spice rubbed Karubi ribs paired with a side of green papaya-carrot slaw.
Wanjoji Refreshments quenches thirsts with The Starr of Harambe frozen drink with Starr African rum and mango puree in a souvenir mug.
It was tough to decide what to try, so we ordered a few different items to taste as many things as possible. We ordered the grilled chicken skewers, the grilled beef kabob flatbread, the spice rubbed Karubi Ribs, as well as the watermelon lemonade. Everything was delicious, but the family favorites were the chicken skewers and the beef kabob flatbread. The watermelon lemonade was so refreshing! It just may be my new favorite drink!
As we began to eat, I discovered that my friend Laurita and her parents were there too. I found them and we all sat together to enjoy this delicious experience in wonderful company! We spent the rest of the day at Animal Kindgom together, which was a completely unplanned and truly welcomed surprise, all due to a little bit of pixie dust! It was a magical experience to not only explore and taste what Harambe Market has to offer before it opened to the public, but to share that experience with my family and my dear amiga!
Harambe Market is the first of many new things coming to Walt Disney World, and we look forward to visiting again real soon!
Please let us know if you’ve visited Harambe Market, what did you think?
