“Teens Exploring Technology” (TXT) wants South Los Angeles to get excited about tech. On July 25th, TXT is going to Nickerson Gardens in the Watts neighborhood in South LA for the first hackathon ever held within a housing development with the 1st Annual Watts Hackathon , #HustleAndCode. The non-profit is inviting teens of the community to join them for a day filled with speakers, collaboration, and, of course, coding.
Using beginner-friendly software, and the help of volunteer developers, teens will spend their day coding to make the best app that they can. TXT is providing 100 computers, and enlisting over 60 volunteers to make sure that everyone’s experience is exciting, fun, and educational.
The idea of “Hustle & Code” day was inspired by one of their youth, a resident of the Nickerson Gardens, a 16 year old young man, who is a genius programmer.
The goal of the day is to inspire more teens to become the innovators of today. TXT believes teens can use computer science as a tool for social change and improve our communities.
They expect to have 100 youth from the area to come learn about code and mobile app development. At the end of the hackathon, teens would have learned about app development and develop their own app.
Teens can register to attend HERE.
Volunteers are needed so if you live in the area and would like to help shape a young life by teaching them about tech, click HERE. Their goal is to have 30 developers who can help spark a young life!
Sponsors include: Google, Yahoo!, Verizon, the Los Angeles Lakers and The University of Southern California.
