El Galeon and La Familia
How do you teach your children about culture? There’s food, music, customs…the list goes on. How about travel? While travel could be visiting another country, there are often many options nearby that offer tweens a cultural learning experience.
Florida is celebrating 500 years since Ponce de Leon set foot on it’s shores and claimed the land for Spain. Not ones to miss a fiesta and eager to grab every learning opportunity, we kicked off our #FamiliaTravel series with a trip to the location Ponce de Leon first landed in Florida – St. Augustine. A Ford Escape loaded with tweens, a toddler and gear provided the transportation to a city full of culture, history and learning.
Our visit to St. Augustine started with a tour of El Galeón. An 170 foot replica of the Spanish galleons, El Galeoón provides families a look at what it would of been like to sail the seas with Ponce de Leon and the early explorers. And, there are a few modern additions to facilitate learning. iPads pre-loaded with educational games teach children the roles of a ship’s crew and the parts of the ship. Trained staff answer questions and give insights on the ship and history of the early explorers.

The next stop was the over 340 year old fort Castillo de San Marcos. After changing hands multiple times between Spain, Britain and finally the United States, Castillo de San Marcos is now a National Monument. Guests can view a traditional cannon firing ceremony, tour the forts rooms and learn about it’s rich history. A long conversation with the gift shop operator while I was hiding there to shield the napping baby from the sound of the cannon firing, yielded lots of information including the fact that children can participate in the Junior Ranger program and fort staff are dressed in traditional 17th century Spanish military garb.

With all of the talk about Ponce de Leon and his search for the Fountain of Youth, we decided on day 2 to test the Ford Escape’s GPS and it worked. It fond us the Fountain of Youth! Or at least the park where spring which has been thought of as Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth was located. The Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine is a smaller attraction with interesting information on the Native Americans and early explorers including archaeological sites. While most visitors come for the spring, the tweens were most interested in walking out on the long dock which marks the spot of Ponce de Leon’s first landing. The trip sparked a conversation on what Ponce de Leon and his crew first experienced as they traveled onto this “new” land.
Between the attractions, amazing food, and rich history, St. Augustine was the PERFECT first stop on our Florida 500 tour with Ford. And the sporty red Ford Escape did an amazing job keeping the entire family safe, fitting all of the gear (I was worried for a second) and making it a smooth trip.

¿Cómo enseñar a los niños acerca de la cultura? Podemos hablarles sobre la comida, música, costumbres… la lista es interminable. ¿Qué les parece un viaje? Mientras que se puede visitar otro país, a menudo hay muchas opciones de viajes cercano que ofrecen experiencia de aprendizaje cultural para jóvenes entre las edades de siete y doce años.
La Florida está celebrando 500 años desde que Ponce de León puso pie en la orilla y reclamó estas tierras para España.
Ya que no somos de los que perdemos una fiesta y deseosos de tomar toda oportunidad de aprendizaje, dimos comienzo a nuestra serie #FamiliaTravel con un viaje al lugar donde Ponce de Leon descendió primero en la Florida: San Agustín. Un Ford Escape cargado, con dos “tweens”, una niñita y dos adultos provee el transporte a una ciudad llena de cultura, historia y aprendizaje.
Iniciamos nuestra visita a San Agustín con una gira por El Galeón. Una réplica de 170 pies de eslora de los galeones españoles, El Galeón ofrece a las familias un vistazo a como pudo haber sido navegar los mares con Ponce de León y los primeros exploradores. Y, contamos con algunos detalles modernos para facilitar el aprendizaje. iPads pre-cargados con juegos educativos para enseñar a los niños el papel que desempeña la tripulación de un buque y las distintas partes de la nave. El Galeón también ofrece personal capacitado para contestar preguntas y dar información sobre el buque y la historia de los primeros exploradores.
La siguiente parada fue en la fortaleza Castillo de San Marcos, de más de 340 años de construído. Después de cambiar de manos varias veces entre España, Gran Bretaña y finalmente Estados Unidos, el Castillo de San Marcos es ahora un monumento nacional. Los visitantes pueden ver una tradicional ceremonia de disparos de cañón, visitar las habitaciones de la fortaleza y conocer su rica historia. Tuve una larga conversación con el operador de la tienda de regalos, mientras me escondí allí para proteger a la bebé durante su siesta, de el sonido de disparos de cañón. Él me dió mucha información, incluyendo el hecho de que los niños pueden participar en el programa Junior Ranger y que la ropa que usa el personal de la fortaleza es semejante al tradicional uniforme militar español del siglo 17.
Con toda la charla sobre Ponce de León y su búsqueda de la Fuente de la Juventud, en el segundo día decidimos probar el sistema de navegación GPS del Ford Escape, y funcionó. Nos llevó directamente a la Fuente de la Juventud! O, al menos, al parque donde se encuentra el riachuelo que ha sido considerado como lugar de orígen de la fuente de la juventud de Ponce de León. La Fuente de la Juventud en San Agustín es una atracción pequeña con información interesante sobre los nativos americanos y los primeros exploradores, incluyendo los lugares arqueológicos. Aunque la mayoría de los visitantes vienen a ver el riachuelo, los pre-adolescentes son más interesados en salir a caminar por el largo muelle que marca el lugar del primer desembarco de Ponce de León. El viaje provocó una conversación familiar sobre lo que Ponce de León y su equipo experimentó la primera vez que viajó a esta “nueva” tierra.
Entre las atracciones, la fantástica comida, y su rica historia, San Agustín fue perfecta como primera parada en nuestro viaje de Florida 500 con Ford. El deportivo y rojo Ford Escape hizo un trabajo espectacular manteniendo toda la familia segura, con espacio para colocar todo nuestro equipo (ésto me preocupó momentáneamente), en fín, un viaje sin problemas.
